Thursday Note Home
Dear Visitation Families,
One of the characteristics I have noticed about Visitation Catholic School’s community is how much it feels like a big family here. Families support and care for one another. In times of crisis, support and care pours out to the families that have experienced loss and injury. I see constant generosity in what you freely share with others who are in need and with your warm response to any request. The staff appreciates your kindness expressed in Wednesday treats that are left in the Staff Room and in the thoughtful gifts from the secret pals. So, I just wanted to say an overall “Thank you!” and I am most thankful to be part of this community!
REMINDER TO MARK THIS DATE: October 28th, at 5:00, there will be a special Mass at St. Ann’s Church. All four parishes are involved as Archbishop Brunett officially installs Fr. Tuan as the Pastor of the four parish cluster. Several of our school children are involved as greeters or gift bearers. I would like to see as many of the children at this Mass, dressed in their uniforms, as possible. Any child who attends
this Mass in uniform will earn a free dress coupon. This is also a beautiful and solemn celebration.
CONFERENCES: You should be receiving your appointment time in today’s letter. If you did not receive a time, or you need to change the time you were assigned, please call the office.
SAFETY COMMITTEE: There are still a few spots open if you would like to be part of the safety group which is looking at safety and security issues in the school. Send your name in or call the office. Thanks to all of you who have already volunteered to be part of this committee.

Speaking of Thanksgiving, PTO is hosting the Turkey Feathers Contest again with all proceeds going to Visitation Food Bank. Watch for details! PTO is also looking for a few good chili chefs to organize and run the 1st Annual Chili Cook-Off on December 2nd. This FUN raiser involves cooking up your favorite chili recipe and bringing it to share. Prizes will be awarded for the best and most original recipes! SPIRITUAL OPPORTUNITY: If you have the opportunity, come to Visitation Church any Friday, from 9:00 – 10:00. That is when the school children attend weekly Mass. It is wonderful to listen to their voices raised in prayer and song!
POR FAVOR: The staff is looking for the donation of an espresso maker for the staff room. A barista has been discovered in our midst. If you happen to have an unused espresso maker taking up room in your closet or cupboard, we promise to give it a good home.

Thursday Note Home
Dear Visitation Families,
In light of recent events, both on our playground and in schools around the nation, I would like to take a moment and talk about safety. This week one of our students had an accident on the playground. It was serious enough to require stitches to his leg. He is recuperating and will hopefully be back at school soon. I would like to commend our playground monitors, Christine Buzard and Joe Leister, because their actions ensured quick aid for the student while keeping all of the other students safe.
As always, when there is an accident involving injuries, we review what happened and look for ways to improve safety. Two actions came out of the review. First, Joe and Christine, along with help from Alex Desmonie, carefully examined the fence and removed severalold pieces of wire that were hanging from the fence. Second, I have temporarily banned football on the playground. Students may throw a football back and forth, but they may not run plays. The question is what activities are appropriate to the limitations of the space while still providing fun and physical movement?
We also reviewed security procedures with support personnel and Extended Care. We have good policies in place. All exterior doors, with the exception of the front door, are locked at all times. All visitors must stop in the office to get a visitor pass, and anyone without a pass is questioned. All fence gates are locked. Students are instructed to not speak with anyone at the fences during recess. All of our personnel are trained in CPR, or will be soon, and many have had first aid courses. These are all good procedures, but is there more we can do to ensure the safety of our children?
To help us answer these questions of safety and playground usage, I have asked Mary Bromberg, who heads the Policy and Planning Committee on the School Commission, to form a committee to examine issues of safety in all areas of our school and make recommendations. If you would like to be part of this committee, please call the office.
CALLING ALL FORMS: Speaking of safety issues, some emergency forms have not been returned.
These are absolutely vital when any emergency occurs. We have sent copies of the missing forms to any family missing them, so please check your envelope and if there are forms to be filled out, please fill them out and return them ASAP.

DON’T FORGET THE FALL FESTIVAL: The annual Fall Festival is on Saturday October 14th. This is always a great event with lots of crafts, food, and fun. There is also going to be a talent show in the afternoon. Did you know that our own Fr. Tuan plays the trumpet? Don’t forget the German Dinner is Sunday 2PM – 6PM.
CONFERENCES: Slips were to be back to the office by today, Thursday, October 5th. We will send confirmations of your appointment time home on Thursday, October 12th. If you missed getting your slip back by October 5th, we will assume that any day or time is acceptable.

PENNY WARS: Are your children checking everywhere for pennies to bring in? The reason is that Student Council is running a great fund raiser called Penny Wars. Each class has a jar outside of their door. The objective is to get the most pennies in your jar. You can sabotage other classes by putting nickels, dimes, quarters, or dollars into other jars, because those coins actually subtract the number of pennies. The Holy Name Society gets all of the proceeds. The contest ends on October 20th.
YEARBOOK: Please sign the response portion of this letter if you would NOT like your child’s photo to appear in the yearbook.

Talent Show
Our talents are God's gift to us. Our use of those talents is our Thank You.
We are looking for parish / school children and adults to share their talents on the afternoon of Saturday October 14th to entertain visitors at the Fall Festival.
If you can sing, dance, do magic, play an instrument, tell jokes, or anything that will make people smile, you are invited to thank God for the talents you have by joining us.
Specifics are:

- Entertainment will be from noon to 4PM on Saturday, Oct 14th.
- Entertainers will perform on the Upper Hall Stage with each act starting on the hour and half hour. This will allow approximately 9 periods of entertainment.
- Limited to 20 minutes or less. This will allow the next performance to set up.
- Microphones are available. Suggest you bring your music player if needed. We will have a spare just in case.
- The MC will introduce your act unless you have someone more knowledgeable to do it.
- Note: this entertainment will take place during Fall Festival activities which means people will be coming and going during your performance.

Saturday is Race Day!
On Saturday, September 16, our own Viking Dragon Boat team will race at the Commencement Bay Maritime Festival.
Come cheer Visitation on!
The best place to view the races is the beach at Thea's Park at South 4th and Dock Streets.
Opening ceremonies begin at 9:00AM, with the races starting at 10:00. The Viking paddlers will be in four heats, and we'll finish off the day with a one-on-one race against the Boys & Girls Club.

Golfing and Paddling Saturday
The Third Annual Visitation Golf Classic will be held tomorrow beginning at 10:00AM at Meadow Park Golf Course. Proceeds benefit VCS. For more information, download the PDF flyer.

School Orientation on August 30th
As a reminder, school orientation will be on Wednesday from 8:00AM to Noon, and from 1:00PM to 3:00PM.
Come in any time during those hours with your child to meet the teachers, drop off supplies, and pick up a short assignment that will be due on the first day of school.

Viking Dragonboat on the Foss!
We had a fantastic practice on Sunday! Sixteen students and recent alumni turned out. Mrs. Marcy, Mr. Ryng, and a few parents rounded out the crew. It was great fun, and we're looking forward to our next practice on September 2nd.

Important Dragonboat Schedule Change
Due to unforeseen circumstances, TDBA has been forced to reschedule our first practice session.
On behalf of everyone here, please accept my personal apologies for this inconvenience. It is my hope that everybody will be able to adjust to the new time. If you have any issues, please contact me as soon as possible. If you miss this first practice, it is still possible for you to be on the team, but please try to make it if you can.
The first practice will now be held at TDBA on Sunday, August 20th, at 3:00PM. The times and dates of the other practices are unchanged. We will be calling everyone who signed up to confirm the new time and date.
Again, I apologise for any inconvenience this rescheduling may cause.
