Thursday Note Home
Dear Visitation Families,
As I write this, the sun is shining and the sky is blue. It definitely looks like Spring has come. Of course, being the Pacific Northwest, you could be reading this as the rain is pouring down!
As we head into Spring, our second trimester has also ended. Teachers have worked hard to prepare report cards so that you can have an accounting of your child(ren)’s progress. Report cards will be handed out to all students today, March 22nd, so be sure to check your child(ren)’s backpack if you don’t see it today!
HEALTH SCREENINGS: The school-wide health screenings were done on Tuesday, March 20th. If your child was absent or the screening went well, you will not have a report in this week’s note Home. If there is a concern, you will see the Heath Screening report to parents indicating a need for further assessment. Also, thank you to Therese Hale, R.N. for organizing the Health Screenings and Heather Liufau who was a parent helper.

A VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: PTO is sponsoring our Parish Soup Night being held this Monday, March 26th at 5 PM in the School Cafeteria. Volunteers are needed to bring soup and help with cleanup and setup. Call Tona Mickelson at (253) 377-1280.
Also…. Volunteers are needed to help decorate Visitation Church on Holy Saturday (April 7th) beginning at 9:30AM. Please call the Rectory if you can help or just show up to lend a helping hand. Your help counts towards your service hours!
FINANCIAL AID UPDATE: All Financial Aid requests have been submitted to the Archdiocese. If you filled out paperwork you should be receiving a letter sometime after Easter.
PLEASE SLOW IT DOWN: A few parents and staff have reported concerns over cars going too fast as they exit the school grounds at the end of the day. Please, for the safety of all, enter and exit slowly and cautiously.
FYI: Tuition for the pre-kindergarten programs will not increase for the 2007-08 school year.

Dear Visitation Families,
You should have received an accounting of volunteer hours and fund-raising dollars your family has generated to date. If you noticed that you haven't done many (or any) hours, there are still many activities you can participate in to finish up your hours and have some fun, too!
Remember that each family is required to donate three hours towards the auction and Auction Central is in need of all the hands it can muster to finish up the baskets and other needs for the Auction. Be sure to contact Marta Palmquist-Cady or Annette Thomas.
Tona Mickelson, our PTO president, has put together a list of opportunities for hours. Look for it in today's Note Home. You can also take care of hours by working in your parish. Visitation Parish is looking for help with the Phoenix Housing. Look for more information in the vestibule of the Church. When we all contribute our time and talent, we strengthen our community.
SPEAKING OF TALENT: Auditions will be held during lunch in the Music Room on March 29 and 30th. Check today's envelope for a sign-up form. The Talent Show is scheduled for April 27th.
NO BAND: There will be no band practice on Friday, March 16th. Mr. Anderson will be at the Bellarmine Faculty Retreat.
GREAT FOOD, FUN TIME: St. John of the Woods is hosting their annual Crab Feed on Saturday, March 17th. The food is tasty and not expensive! What a great way to spend St. Patrick's Day.

CONGRATULATIONS: Our Junior High Boys' Basketball Team defeated All Saints in the last game of the season. Their overall record is five wins and two losses. Good work Team and Coaches!
ISSUES OF ENVIRONMENT: Be sure to ask a 7th grader to talk about environmental issues affecting the Columbia River. Ten of our 7th graders participated in International Day along with a number of other 7th graders from Catholic Schools around the area. They spent the day learning about environmental issues involving the world and our region.
PRAYERS PLEASE: continued prayers for the grandfather of Alex (PK) who is fighting cancer.

In their final game of the season, our Junior High boys basketball team beat All Saints in their home court on Saturday to bring their record to 5-2. Their only losses of the season both came from St. Charles Borromeo.

Dear Visitation Families,
Excitement is beginning to build over our annual auction! It is shaping up to be loads of fun and a great opportunity to come together, enjoy ourselves, and support our great school. Tickets are going fast for our Auction Gala on March 31st, so get those reservation in ASAP.
Our Family Night Auction is set for Friday, March 23rd, in the Upper Hall. You might want to check out the Lower Hall, as well, where the 6th grade will be running a carnival to raise money for 6th grade camp. Rumor has it that a raffle is part of the fund-raising. The winner of the raffle will have the honor of throwing a pie (cream, of course) at Ms. Bowen. Now that is a dedicated teacher!
REGISTRATION UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who has returned their re-enrollment paperwork. Most of our families have returned their registration papers. If you still haven't sent those in, please do so now. We will be sending out new registration forms on Monday, March 12th, to all of the families that have indicated that they wish to enroll in our school next year.
REGISTRATION APPOINTMENTS: Soon we will be scheduling registration appointments for families to sign their contracts for the upcoming year. Registration for 2007-08 will continue in the format we have used for the last few years.
Each family will make a single appointment at the school where you will go over your fundraising and service hour commitments for the coming school year. You will also be asked to participate in the 2007-08 Annual Fund Campaign. While meeting with me, we will review any outstanding fees, service hours and fundraising commitments from this year and sign your contracts for the coming year.
Appointments will last approximately thirty minutes. As we have done in the past, families who have not requested tuition assistance will be scheduled first. We will schedule appointments for families who have requested tuition assistance once we receive the tuition assistance information from the Archdiocese.
If you attend a Catholic parish other than those in the cluster, please let us know and we will send you the Parish Subsidy form for neighboring parishes.
KINDERGARTEN / PRE-KINDERGARTEN APPLICANTS: We are in the process of sending Kindergarten applications to current families who have requested one, in addition to pre-kindergarten families who are eligible for Kindergarten.

Dear Visitation Families,
March is an extremely busy month for the school. We are in the middle of registration, budgets, the trimester coming to an end, and trying to remember to keep our Lenten resolutions! There are so many events happening and deadlines looming, sometimes it's hard to keep our minds on the meaning and purpose of this Lenten season. Please keep us in your prayers as we keep you in ours!
SPEAKING OF REGISTRATION: Thank you to everyone who has returned their re-enrollment paperwork. Based on the information I have, there are still several families who have not yet returned their re-enrollment paperwork. Please return these as soon as possible so that I can set my budget.
As a reminder, Monday, March 5th, is the last day to turn in applications for tuition assistance. These applications go to the Archdiocese and they will not accept late applications.
Also, any families who have decided to not return to Visitation next year (with the exception of graduates) are asked to contact the school office to schedule an exit interview with Father Tuan, our Pastor, and myself.
We appreciate hearing from you what things went well for you here and what you wish would have been done differently.

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART A HUGE SUCCESS: Thank you participants and volunteers for making the Jump Rope for Heart event such a success. Our goal this year was to raise $500 and we raised $922.16. Congratulations to Aytunde Gilbert (3), Chris Mickelson (3) and Madalyn Hughes (1) who really worked hard on fundraising. Great work and we even got pictures in the Tacoma Weekly!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR. SEUSS: Dr. Seuss' birthday is Friday, March 2nd. The Cat in the Hat book turns 50 on Friday as well. To celebrate the book's birthday, Random House, the book's publisher, will donate one children's book to First Book, an organization that gives books to disadvantaged children, for every online birthday card received on its Web site. To send birthday wishes, visit the Cat in the Hat's Website: www.seussville.com. There will also be a nationwide read-aloud of The Cat in the Hat at 11:36 Pacific Standard Time. Our own Kindergarteners will be reading all of his books after the noon recess with help from their 7th grade buddies.
WOULD YOU, COULD YOU, ON A UNICYCLE? If you are in the 5th through 8th grade and interested in learning to ride a unicycle, be at the Upper Hall on Thursday morning, March 8th at 7:15 AM. Mrs. Marcy will be supervising. Sammy and Tessa Hop will be sharing their unicycle skills. Please fill out the release form that's in today's note home folder and return it to Mrs. Marcy's box by Thursday morning. Unicyclers will be working towards unicycling in the Junior Daffodil Parade on April 14th.

No. Really. Any current family can earn one month of free tuition for their child.
Recruit a new family, and you will receive one month of free tuition for one child. Recruit two families, earn two months. It's that simple.
A month not enough for you? How about a year?
For every family you recruit, your name will be placed in a drawing. Once ten families have recruited new families, we will draw one name for a year's free tuition for one child for next year.
What's the catch?
No catch. There are a few details, though. The new family must have a child in Kindergarten through 8th grade – new Pre-Kindergarten students are not eligible for this promotion. Your month of free tuition will be awarded in the month following the new family's registration.
This offer valid from September 28, 2006 through March 30, 2007.

Dear Visitation Families,
The Student Council led a meaningful Ash Wednesday Liturgy this week. Thank you to Marilee Rowe for her hard work. It was a good start to the Lenten Season. Personally, this is my favorite Liturgical season because it is full of so many possibilities for new beginnings. We have a chance to choose one thing to focus on for the next forty days, whether it is a new habit we wish to begin or an old habit we wish to end. We can use these days to consciously make the change that will make us better people, able to joyfully celebrate the Risen Lord on Easter.
ST. ANN PRE-K NUMBER: For those parents who have children at Visitation Pre-Kindergarten at St. Ann, there is a new telephone number to call if you need to contact the classroom. It is 253-476-2142.

Adults are $7, Children and Seniors are $5, or the family price is $21. What a great way to have a good dinner out for a reasonable price and support our sister parish in the process!

HEALTH SCREENING: Tuesday, March 20th, we will be conducting our annual vision, hearing, and scoliosis checks. Students in Pre-K through 8th grade will receive a basic vision and hearing check. Those in 5th through 8th grade will also receive a scoliosis check.
If you don't want your child/ren screened by our health care professionals, please sign the opt-out form sent home and return it to our office as soon as possible.
We are looking for parent volunteers who are registered nurses to help us with the health screenings. If you are available to help, please contact Therese Hale, RNC, our health screening coordinator at 472-6327.

Dear Visitation Families,
This is an extremely busy time of year for Catholic School Administrators. During this month we must determine a budget for next year so we look at increases in expenses, trends in past budgets, and most importantly, what our enrollment numbers will be next year.
I am blessed with a good finance committee on our School Commission and the School Commission itself which gives input and advice. However, I particularly need help from you to give me the data I need to accurately determine revenue next year.
Enclosed in this week's note home are your Returning Family Applications and Registration worksheets for the 2007 - 2008 school year. Please fill out the re-enrollment form and paperwork as quickly as possible and get it back to the school by the deadline, Monday, March 5th. This will help me, more than anything, to have an accurate picture of revenue needs next year.
You will also find the Catholic Schools Department Tuition Assistant Grant Application in this note home should your family need tuition assistance.
Please have the completed tuition assistance application, with the appropriate documentation attached, to the school office no later than Monday,March 5, 2007. Please make sure to attach all documentation requested, that all appropriate boxesare filled in and that all information in legible.
RETURNING FAMILIES: If you have a new child coming to Visitation Catholic School next year,please sign up below and we will send you a new student application. We need some additionalinformation on new students, so we do not include them on the returning application.
ATTENTION PRE-K FAMILIES: Those of you with children in our Pre-Kindergarten program looking to enroll your children in kindergarten next year, you will be asked to complete a New Family Application and Registration Worksheet. Please don't be alarmed that you do not have a returning application in your family envelope. Please sign up below and we will send you one in the next
few weeks.
TUITION INCREASE: It is a reality of budgets that expenses go up each year and school budgetsare certainly no exception. This year the School Commission and I have determined that a 5% increase will help us stay abreast of the increases while not placing an undo burden on our parents. This 5% takes into account that the cost of living has risen about 5% in the past year. In addition, employee benefits are increasing by about 6% and we are trying to increase the salaries of our teachers as proposed in our Long-Range Plan.
Along with the 5% increase, we also needed to align our out-of-parish rates to make them both more equitable with in-parish rates and to bring them more into line with out-of-parish rates charged by the other Catholic schools in the area. In-parish rates make the assumption that families who are part of a parish are tithing each week through their time, treasure and talent. The parish, in turn, gives financial support to the school.
In monetary terms, the expectation of support is roughly $1000 a year. More children often means that parents are even more involved in the life of the parish. With those facts in mind, the increase in the out of parish rate for one child is $1000 more than the in-parish rate for one child. To bring the 2nd child out-of-parish rate into line, we added $2000 increase to the one child out-of-parish rate. Finally, we added $2500 to the one child out-of-parish rate for the 3rd or more child. Please understand that we took a number of factors into account and uppermost in our minds was to meet expenses without placing an unacceptable burden on our parents. Also, please keep in mind that tuition assistance is available for both in and out of parish families.
DON'T FORGET: Friday, February 16th is a regular school day. There will be no band, beginning or advanced, on Friday, February 16th. Mr. Anderson is at a music conference in Oregon on Friday.
A GREAT OPPORTUNITY: a brochure for the Pierce County Master Gardeners program for children is available if you would like one. This is a great program to involve youth in fun gardening activities. This is perfect as Spring approaches! Please sign up below and we will be happy to send you one... or stop by the office to pick one up.
GOODIES: The Women's Club at Visitation Parish is hosting Coffee, Donuts, and a Bake Sale on Sunday, Feb. 18th in the Lower Hall after the Sunday masses.
A DAY OF REFLECTION: Take some time out from you busy life! The Holy Name Society is offering a "Day of Reflection" Saturday, Feb. 17th at the Collier Center. Mass begins at 9:00AM followed by a presentation from Deacon Mike Teskey from 9:30 to 1:00.
CONGRATULATIONS: To Brendan, who received his First Reconciliation at St. Rita's Church last Saturday. We join in prayer for his First Communion coming up on April 15th!

Thursday Note Home
Dear Visitation Families,
We had a wonderful Open House on Sunday, February 4th. We had many people (over 100) come through to visit our school. Some were alumni coming to see how the school had changed and others came with interest in enrolling their children. Our student tour guides did a great job of showing our school.
Thanks to 7th grade student ambassadors Elise, Ben, Sammy, Michael, and Logan. Also thank you to our 5th grade greeters Jonathan and Tessa.
Our School Commission members were here to answer questions and give information about our school. Thanks to Jennifer Keller, Joe Swortz, Cecile Reider, and Elisabeth Albers. Finally, thank you to our wonderful Cub Scout Pack 10 for the tasty breakfast goodies.
JUMP ROPE FOR HEART: It’s that time of year again and Visitation Catholic School PE will be Celebrating “Heart Month” by jumping rope to benefit the American Heart Association. Your child will be bringing home a pledge form. Guardians, please sign and return the signature part so that your child can receive a certificate and a sticker. We will be working on jump rope skills this week and next.
Also next week in PE, on the 14th and 15th, we will be jumping the entire PE period.
Sponsor packets( donations of money for the American Heart Association) are due in Mrs. Marcy’s box by Friday, February 16th. If you would like to come to school and be part of the Jump Rope for the Heart during your child’s PE time, come by and help twirl a rope or bring a healthy snack/water for the class.
SPEAKING OF HEARTS: Yes, Valentine’s Day is next Wednesday. Please be sure to check with your child’s teacher for guidelines on treats and cards.
CONGRATULATIONS: The Box Top/Label Contest is over and the winners are 1st Grade which wins a pizza party. Pre-K was second, winning an ice cream party, and 2nd grade was third, winning a free dress day.
THANK YOU: To one of our new parents, Laura Earles, who brought supplies of hand sanitizers, Kleenex, and surface cleaners. The staff and teachers really appreciated these supplies!
Thank you also to Tony Rector, who did a great job as referee for our Staff/Student Basketball game.
PLEASE SAY HELLO: We have hired two new staff members. Sonia Garza is assisting in the Kitchen at lunch and Bridget Gardner is the new playground monitor working with Mr. Leister. They are great additions to a great staff!
ACCREDITATION UPDATE: As you know, Visitation Catholic School has been working on an accreditation self-study under the auspices of the Northwest Association of Private Schools. We were scheduled for our pre-visit on February 13th and our three day visit on March 28th, 29th and 30th.
Due to extenuating circumstances, the chair of the visiting team was unable to continue in that capacity. We were very lucky to have another qualified chairperson step forward so that we could continue our accreditation process.
However, our calendar has been adjusted to accommodate the new team. Our new pre-visit date is March 27th. Our three day visit is now scheduled for April 16th, 17th and 18th.
I would like to particularly thank our Leadership team of Mary Ann Woodard and Elizabeth Harburg-Petrich for their flexibility and humor as we have gone through these past few weeks. I would also like to thank Dr. Henry-Borroughs from the Archdiocese who worked tirelessly to support our efforts and help us continue with the accreditation process.
COLD AND FLU SEASON: You might have noticed that colds and the flu are making their rounds through the school population. Please be sure to keep your child home if he/she is running a fever, coughing / sneezing a lot, or complaining of a sustained headache. These seem to be the most common symptoms.
Please remember that a parent or guardian is expected to call the school office between 8 am and 9 am each day to report their child is staying home (unless you tell us the child will be out for the week). If we do not receive this call, the office must call you at home or work. Please know that we appreciate your call as it saves the office making multiple calls on multiple students!!
Upon their return to school, a note verifying the date and reason for the absence is required. The written excuse should be given to the teacher and kept on file for the school year.
RE-ENROLLMENT: We will be sending home the re-enrollment forms for next year in next Thursday’s Envelope.
LENTEN CALENDAR: Please read over and keep the Lenten Calendar that came home in today’s envelope, compliments of our kindergarten teacher, Ms. Hoffmann. Lent is just around the corner and this is a good way to help your child progress through the season.

I would also like to thank Dr. Henry-Borroughs from the Archdiocese who worked tirelessly to support our efforts and help us continue with the accreditation process.
COLD AND FLU SEASON: You might have noticed that colds and the flu are making their rounds through the school population. Please be sure to keep your child home if he/she is running a fever, coughing / sneezing a lot, or complaining of a sustained headache. These seem to be the most common symptoms.
Please remember that a parent or guardian is expected to call the school office between 8 am and 9 am each day to report their child is staying home (unless you tell us the child will be out for the week). If we do not receive this call, the office must call you at home or work. Please know that we appreciate your call as it saves the office making multiple calls on multiple students!!
Upon their return to school, a note verifying the date and reason for the absence is required. The written excuse should be given to the teacher and kept on file for the school year.
RE-ENROLLMENT: We will be sending home the re-enrollment forms for next year in next Thursday’s Envelope.
LENTEN CALENDAR: Please read over and keep the Lenten Calendar that came home in today’s envelope, compliments of our kindergarten teacher, Ms. Hoffmann. Lent is just around the corner and this is a good way to help your child progress through the season.
