HB 1772, a bill introduced this year by Representative Dave Quall at the request of the Washington State Catholic Conference (WSCC), would have required that the state pay for WASL testing for private schools that choose to administer it.
The bill passed the House Education Committee by a strong majority but died in the House Appropriations Committee. However, WSCC is working with legislators to get this funding into the budget. If it can be budgeted, the funding would be available through the two years that the budget is in effect. The amount that is being requested is only $145,000 per year.
Budget negotiations between the House and Senate will continue until the end of the legislative session, April 22nd. The House has released its budget without any funding for WASL testing for private schools. It is now imperative that it be included in the Senate budget which will be released the week of March 26th.
Please contact your Senator immediately encouraging her or him to include WASL funding for private schools in the Senate budget.
