Thursday Note Home

Dear Visitation Families,

I’ve discovered over time that a school year is a lot like a railroad train negotiating a hill. It starts out slowly, climbing the hill, reaches an apex, then picks up speed as it heads down hill towards its destination. This usually occurs after Easter as we begin planning our calendar and signing contracts for 2007-08. So, as we speed towards our destination of June 15th, be sure to hold on to your hats and do enjoy the scenery!

DON’T FORGET: There will be no PK and K visiting day; there WILL be school on May 4th for Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten at both sites. Parents of new students to those two programs are being contacted to set up appointments.

ANOTHER REMINDER: According to our yearly contract, all commitment hours and fund-raising dollars need to be fulfilled by Friday, April 27th. You will be billed the balance of the hours at a rate of $10.00 per hour as well as the balance of any fund-raising dollars not yet fulfilled. That bill must be paid by May 25th or it will be added to next year’s tuition. Please help us by fulfilling your commitment.

LOOKING FORWARD: May is usually full of great activities and this May will be no exception. May 7th through 11th is Teacher Appreciation Week. It will also be Spirit Week.

Events in that week include:

Monday the 7th will be Crazy Day where the students wear mismatched and silly clothes.

Tuesday the 8th will be Twin Day where students will pick a twin (or triplet) and dress alike.

Wednesday the 9th will be Dress Like an ‘80’s Celebrity (although at the moment no one comes to mind…)

Thursday the 10th will be Pajama Day.

Friday the 11th will be the May Crowning, led by the 7th grade. In honor of the May Crowning, it will be Dress-Up Day where we ask our students to dress in their “church” clothes.

Friday the 11th is also the Spring Spectacular at 7 PM in the Upper Hall, where the band, all of the classes, and talent acts will entertain.

WOW! Our Annual Fund Drive has been extremely successful this year. Our latest figures show that our pledges are at $66,723.30 or 111% of our goal of $60,000. To date we have received $61,392.80. Thank you to all of you who have been so generous and please keep all of our benefactors in your prayers.

COMMITMENT HOURS IDEA: If your schedule doesn’t allow for much time spent on activities, Visitation Parish is looking for someone who would like to be an archivist for the parish archives. Most of the work could be done at your home whenever your schedule permits. It mainly involves putting information into scrapbooks that chronicle parish activities. A lot of support and guidance will be provided.

The person who takes this activity on would automatically satisfy the yearly commitment hours! Please contact Bonnie at the Parish Office (473-4960) if you are interested.

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: The Uniform Exchange is now open, so bring in those uniforms that have grown too small and exchange them for the next size up! Check it all out in the PTO Room, across from the Principal’s office.

AND PRAYERS PLEASE: In the last few weeks a few of our families have had loved ones deploy to Iraq. Please keep them and their families in your prayers for a safe and speedy return. Please continue to pray for Alex’s grandfather and also a prayer for Courtney Bruce to have a speedy recovery from a fractured knee.

Peace and the Blessings,

Sheila Harrison

The Viking Crew Needs YOU!

Once again, the time for Dragonboating approaches! Thanks to an anonymous donor, Visitation Catholic School again has the opportunity to put together a dragonboat team to compete in the Tacoma Maritime Fest Dragon Boat Race on September 16.

We are looking for a total of 22 students, boys and girls, who will be at least 12 years old at the time of the race. Team members and their parents must commit to one introductory meeting, three two-hour practices over the summer, and the full day on race day.

If your child is interested in being on the team, or just in finding out more, please come to our initial meeting on Thursday, May 3 at 6PM in the school cafeteria. We’ll be setting the practice schedule, so please bring you calendars.

Thursday Note Home

Dear Visitation Families,

We have certainly hit the ground running this week. We were pleased to host the Visiting Team for our Accreditation self-study. The team included teachers from All Saints (Puyallup), St. Mary (Aberdeen), Assumption-St. Bridget (Seattle), St. Catherine (Seattle), Holy Family (Auburn) and our Chairperson from School of Our Lady in Santa Ana, California.

The final determination of how many years we are accredited for (which could be up to six) won’t be known until the end of July or August.

However, I can say that they were very impressed with our self-study, our school, our priests, and especially, our parent community. Thank you to all who came to the Parent night on Monday. You showed, by your words and attitude, what makes our school community so special. Thank you to all of the parents who helped by bringing food to our visitors. Thank you, especially, to Celeste Ayton and Heather Liufau. Your food was so tasty!

Our staff worked very hard on their evidence binders and presentations and they are very proud of them. Please take the opportunity to look at these as they are displayed in the hallways until Friday.

Thank you, finally, to Mary Ann Woodard and Elizabeth Harburg-Petrich who did an incredible job as the Leadership Team!!

CHANGE OF CALENDAR: There will be no PK and K visiting day; consequently there WILL be school on May 4th for Kindergarten and Pre-Kindergarten at both sites. Parents of new students to those two programs will be contacted soon to set up appointments.

DON’T FORGET: Monday, April 23rd, is a 12:30 dismissal. Also, if you are asking for in parish tuition, be sure that you have a current time, talent, and/or treasure card on file with your parish.

ONE MORE REMINDER: Parents, if you are signing your child into morning Extended Care before 7:45 AM, you will be charged the hourly fee of $7.50.

CONGRATULATIONS: To Catherine (6th) whose art work has been chosen to be put in a book published by the Saul Haas Foundation. Congratulations, also, to Brendan (2nd) who received his First Communion on April 15th at St. Rita’s Church.

TESTING PREPARATION: Our testing schedule will begin on Thursday, April 19th and extend to Friday, May 4th. Especially, please do not schedule doctor appointments for students in grades 3, 4, 6, or 7 that would be during the school day between those dates. Also, be sure that your child gets a good night’s sleep as well as a good breakfast during the testing weeks.

CLEANING UP: A community clean up is scheduled for Saturday, April 28th, 2007 from 10 AM to 2 PM. The gathering spot is Edison Elementary.

PRAYERS PLEASE: For Joe Palmquist, father of Marta Palmquist Cady and Virginia Brewer, and grandfather of three of our students. Continued prayers, please, for Alex’s grandfather who is fighting cancer. There is good news that his cancer hasn’t spread and he is tolerating chemo well.

INVITATION: The next meeting of the Visitation Parish Stewardship Commission will be at the Collier Center on Tuesday, April 24th from 6Pm – 8PM. There will be three divisions to their agenda: Prayer and Reflection; Discussion of ACA; Discussion of Hospitality as a tool of stewardship. They will be drafting action plans for their 2007 Visitation ACA and of a stewardship plan for evangelization through hospitality.

Peace and the Blessings,

Sheila Harrison

PACE Fulcrum Scholarships

We would like to thank the PACE Fulcrum Foundation for $12,500 in tuition assistance for 25 of our students for this coming year. Over the years, PACE has been extremely generous to our students, and we thank them for their continued support.

Each year, we receive assistance funds from individual donors, from the Archdiocese, as well as from the Fulcrum Foundation. We are grateful to them all.
