FUNDRAISING/SERVICE HOURS REPORT: You will find your fundraising and service hours report attached to this Note Home. Please remember that the deadline to turn in your pink slips is April 30, 2007. The candy bar sale is the last fundraiser of the year, so if you still need to finish fundraising money, the candy sale is your last opportunity! If you need pink slips, there are a few extra in today’s Note.
FYI: Please remember that the Accreditation Visiting Team will be visiting our school on April 16, 17, and 18th. If you see them in the hallways, be sure to say hello! A few people have asked about the purpose and benefit of going through the Accreditation process. We are already accredited by the State of Washington. This is a more in-depth process through the National Catholic Education Association
The process is to self-examine how our school operates, what our curriculum is, what instructional and assessment methods we use, what specific learning expectations we have of each student, who we are and what our long-term goals are. In this process we also assess our strengths and our challenges. Finally, we provide evidence that we are doing what we say we are doing. Then we set three to four major goals that are identified as a school improvement plan.
We develop a three year plan for how to accomplish each of the goals. Finally, we invite a team of teachers and administrators from other Catholic schools to visit and affirm our self-examination. They look for evidence to support our assertions and either agree or challenge our conclusions. Once they write their report, we are accredited by the Northwest Association of Accredited Schools for a period up to six years at which point we will go through the process again. Each year in between the self-examination we must report our progress on our goals. Every school in the Archdiocese has either gone through or will go through this process very soon. Many schools are on their second or third study.
When I was at St. Anthony in Renton, we first went through the process in 1995. Although it takes a great deal of work, particularly on the part of the staff, it is a good process because it helps us identify our strengths and strategize ways to constantly improve our program.
TESTING MOVE: Because of our Accreditation visit, we are moving our WASL and ITBS testing to the following week so that our visitors can see our students and teachers involved in instruction.
PURPLE SHEETS: If you find a purple Receipt and Acknowledgement form in your envelope this week, PLEASE sign it and return it!
Peace and the Blessings of Our Risen Lord to each of you,
Sheila Harrison
